Haya Water to increase water treatment capacity and implement distribution network in Muscat

Oman-based state-owned Haya Water is implementing a 290km-long water distribution network in Muscat, to deliver increased amounts of treated water produced by new under-construction plants.

The water reuse project is expected to support Oman and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, and improve the envirnomment and the health and safety of residents region.

The treated water will be supplied through a 1,000mm diameter main pipeline from the provinces of Wilayat of Greater Muttrah to the Wilayat of Barka. Subsidiary conduits will ahve diameters of between 100mm to 500mm.

Using Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, the treatment plants will produce high quality water to the region.

The Muscat Municipality has earmarked about 50 million litres of treated water every day for irrigation purposes and a considerable amount for golf courses, including five million litres per day for Almouj at the Wave and one and quarter million litres per day for Ghala Valley Golf Club.

The Muscat Hills project will also be provided with three and a half million litres of treated water per day, compared to 45,000 litres per day for the Aviation Club, 99,000 litres per day for the Al Qala Club and 25,000 litres per day for the Royal Opera House.

Haya Water CEO Hussain Abdul Hussain said the water reuse project aims to protect the environment from sewage outflow pollution.

"As an additional benefit, the water reuse project aims at providing treated wastewater to be used in irrigation and planting purposes," Hussain added.

"The treatment plants now produce about 80 million litres of treated water per day, and this will increase to 220 million litres per day when the project is completed by 2018.

"It is expected that 80% of Muscat residents will be connected to the sewage networks by that time."
