Hydro International trains Severn Trent Water operators in sand filtration equipment management

UK-based storm water and wastewater treatment products company Hydro International has developed a training package for Severn Trent Water’s operators to enhance their sand filtration equipment management.

The package aims to train employees to maintain Severn Trent’s DynaSand units more efficiently to save costs and reduce power consumption.

Severn Trent uses over 100 DynaSand filters purchased from Hydro International across 31 sites in the West Midlands.

Some of the filters have been in operation for over 25 years.

Hydro International has operated a service contract deal for the filters for nine years and were approached by Severn Trent to conduct the training.

The manufacturer developed a training package and trained 98 Severn Trent operators over a three-month period to build their knowledge of the DynaSand filters.

Severn Trent Water assistant contracts manager Andrew Seed said that the company realised that at times lack of knowledge was resulting in inefficient operation of the equipment.

"Operators are a now a lot more confident about their knowledge of the equipment and that gives confidence to us, too, that our sites are operating effectively," he added.

DynaSand filters are an important part of the tertiary treatment process, which provides a final polish before the water is discharged into the river system.

According to Severn Trent the servicing costs per DynaSand unit have been reduced by 19.3% over the last five years, while the average cost per remedial visit has also come down by around 25%.
