California’s Valley of the Moon Water District to get management overhaul

IBM Research and the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) have joined forces to better manage water resources in Valley of the Moon Water District (VOMWD) in the US state of California.

As part of the new initiative, IBM will provide analytics technology to address the problem of water loss and to potentially locate leaks in VOMWD.

The water loss will be reduced by optimising the setting of the pressure reducing valves at the entrance to VOMWD’s distribution network based on data from existing sensors, as well as from SCADA, billing, pressure gauges, and flow loggers throughout the water system.

IBM smarter water programme director Michael Sullivan said the company’s offerings are assisting SCWA and VOMWD to more efficiently analyse data, anticipate problems and manage resources.

"The ability to track water at such a granular level helps SCWA and Valley of the Moon make informed decisions about how to manage – and conserve – water along its entire lifecycle," Sullivan said.

IBM analytics provides recommendations for water pressure adjustments based on usage, weather, and environmental conditions.
