India to face water scarcity by 2025, report says

Supply and demand mismatch in India will turn it into a water scarce nation by 2025, reveals a study by EA Water.

The study said "With increasing household income and increasing contributions from the service and industrial sectors, the water demand in the domestic and industrial sectors increasing substantially."

Water sector in the Asian country is, however, likely to receive foreign investments of $13bn in the next few years.

Domestic water industry in India is expected to appear lucrative for investors from Canada, Israel, Germany, Italy, US, China and Belgium, reports Press Trust of India.

In the next three years, the nation is expected to receive Rs180bn ($2.82bn) in water sector. India offers extensive scope for water infrastructure growth and waste water management initiatives.

Till 2020, the Industrial market for water in the country will offer huge opportunities, the report states.

While demands for wastewater recycling and industrial water treatment are likely to soar with Maharashtra set to emerge as a hub for water sector.

More than 12 global firms have set their facilities in the Indian state for design and engineering in the cities of Mumbai and Pune.

Over 1,200 water and wastewater treatment specialists in the state serve the small and medium sectors.

Planning is underway for centralised wastewater treatment & recycling plant in Mumbai and Pune.
