Japan to fund Nagaur Lift Water Supply Project in India

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide Rs20bn ($359m) funding to the second phase of the Nagaur lift water supply project in Rajasthan, India.

The estimated project cost is Rs30bn ($538m), with the agency funding two-thirds, reported Dainik Bhaskar.

The Indian Government will provide Rs4bn ($71.8m) under the national rural drinking water project, with the rest being funded by the Rajasthan state government.

The project is expected to be completed in 2016 and will deliver water to Nagaur from the Indira Gandhi canal, reducing its dependence on depleting ground water sources.

The areas of Kuchaman, Nawan, Makrana, Parbatsar, Deedwana, Degana and Ladnoon stand to benefit from the completion of the lift water supply project. Apart from meeting drinking water needs, the project will also reduce possible health hazards.

The local state government has been trying to bring JICA on board to fund the project, and the agency had previously undertaken a survey.

Construction on the second phase of the project is expected to commence in September 2012.

JICA has also been funding other projects in the state including a water maintenance project in the state’s capital, Jaipur.
