MWH Construction wins contract for water storage project in Denver, US

MWH Construction, subsidiary of US based infrastructure firm MWH Global, has won a $100m contract for a project aimed at upgrading the water system in the city of Denver in Colorado, US.

Under the terms of the contract, the firm will be replacing a major storage tank and pump station for the local water utility Denver Water.

The project, termed as the Hillcrest Reservoir Tank and Pump Station project, will involve replacement of two concrete storage reservoirs located at the south of the city with three new concrete basins.

While the existing reservoirs have a combined capacity of 30 million gallons of water, the new installations are expected to have a combined capacity for 45 million gallons.

It will also involve replacement of an existing pump station with a new pump having a daily capacity for 115 million gallons of water.

The facility will continue its operations during the entire term of the project, which is expected to be completed by September 2020. Temporary shutdowns will, however, be scheduled during the design phase of the project.

Denver Water director of engineering Bob Mahoney said: "The basin replacement portion of the project is the capstone of a multi-year, $130m programme to improve the reliability and capacity of our treated water storage system.

"The updated facility will help meet the needs of a growing population, which has placed increasing demand on Hillcrest Reservoir’s aging storage and pumping facilities."

The utility serves over 1.3 million residents in the US city and in many of its surrounding suburbs.

MWH Global vice president and MWH Western district director Roy Fazio said: "Not only will this plant expansion provide potable water for the community for many years, it will also provide jobs for the local economy over the next 30-plus months."
