Passavant-Roediger to provide sludge digestion technology for Iraqi wastewater plant

Drake & Scull International’s wholly owned subsidiary Passavant-Roediger has received a sub-contract to build a sludge treatment system for a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to be located in Kerbala, Iraq.

The contract, worth AED86m ($23.4m), has been awarded by the Iraqi Ministry of Municipalities through the Al Hanan Contracting Company.

Under the terms of the contract, the company will design and build the sludge treatment system based on its patented anaerobic sludge digestion technology.

The scope of the project work also includes installing 12 sludge digesters each with a capacity of 3,400m³ and equipped with the company’s Passavant-Roediger sequential gas lance mixing system.

Passavant Roediger managing director Mazen Bachir said the company has been selected for the redevelopment of key infrastructure for the WWTP.

"Our global experience and patented technology will allow the implementation of an optimal treatment process tailored to the sophisticated requirements of this high-scale project," Bachir said.

"Our modern digesters will guarantee energy saving operations and less consumption of chemical substance required for the treatment process while ensuring efficiency and long term profitability for the client."

The anaerobic sludge digestion technology developed by Passavant-Roediger helps reduce the volumes of semisolid material precipitated by the waste treatment and makes it harmless to discharge safely.

The technology also uses the sludge to convert the organic matter into energy and produce up to 80% of the energy requirements of the WWTP.

The project is scheduled to be delivered in 2013.
