Pennsylvania American Water to build water storage tanks in US states

US-based water utility Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, has unveiled its plan to construct nine new water storage tanks and restore and renew 14 existing tanks across the commonwealth states of Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

The estimated cost of the projects is $16.5m, of which $11.5m will be used to build new tanks and $5m will be spent on the renewal of the existing storage tanks.

Pennsylvania American Water is undertaking construction work to increase water storage capacity to meet increasing water demand of customers and store more water for fire protection.

The company’s rehabilitation programme includes activities such as inspection, as well as sandblasting and repainting the existing tanks to increase their service life and toprotect and maintain the water quality.

The company owns and maintains more than 275 storage structures across the country.

Pennsylvania American Water president Kathy L Pape said water storage tanks will ensure reliable and adequate water supply to the communities that the utility serves.

"The new tanks we’re building are necessary to meet customer demands for reliable water service and fire protection," Pape added.

"Our rehabilitation projects not only extend the tanks’ lifespan, but they also represent a significant cost savings in contrast to replacing the structures."

The company will build new tanks in North Annville Township, Lebanon County with 750,000 gallon capacity; in Susquehanna Depot Borough, Susquehanna County with 680,000 gallon capacity and a 1,000,000 gallon steel tank in Pittston Township, Luzerne County.

It will also build a 400,000 gallon elevated steel tank in Newton Township, Lackawanna County; a tank with 600,000 gallon capacity in Kane Borough, McKeon County and a 100,000 gallon steel tank in Delaware Township, Pike County.

In Delaware Township, Pike County a 135,000 gallon steel tank has been planned; in East Buffalo Township, Union County a 500,000 gallon elevated steel tank has been scheduled and in Ellwood City, Lawrence County a 200,000 gallon standpipe is planned to supplement the existing tank.

The company will rehabilitate existing tanks in several areas over the next several months.

The Pennsylvania American Water will rehabilitate 14 tanks in Allegheny County, Fayette County, Butler County, Bucks County, Montgomery County, Northampton County, Luzerne County, Susquehanna County and Lackawanna County.
