Pulp and paper industry adopts water-efficient solutions to cut cost, says report

US-based market research and analysis firm, Frost & Sullivan, has said that the pulp and paper industry, which uses huge volume of water, is now adopting water efficient methods to cut down rising cost related to high water prices.

Owing to the increase in water costs, manufacturers in the pulp and paper industry are adopting new water efficient methods and advanced wastewater treatment equipments, and reducing water consumption.

In a new report, called ‘CEO 360 Degree Perspective on the Global Pulp and Paper Water and Wastewater Treatment Market’, Frost & Sullivan said that the pulp and paper market earned over $983.9m in revenues in 2012 and is estimated to touch $1.57bn in 2020.

In the report, the company said that advances in the closed-loop and minimal impact production facilities have contributed towards higher market revenues for the overall industry.

Closed-loop systems are especially popular as they allow recycling and reuse of water, and also recover excess pulp fibres in the wastewater.

Pulp and paper manufacturers are now opting for new water treatment solutions, such as membranes to improve treatment levels and reduce the loss of raw materials to minimise overall footprint of pulp and paper production.

Frost & Sullivan Energy and Environmental research analyst Paulina Szyplinska said the industry manufacturers are opting for advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies for easy operations and maintenance, and for efficient energy rating.

"Increasing dependence on water specialists to comply with tightening environmental standards and enhance operational efficiency has accelerated market growth," Szyplinska added.

"Water and wastewater treatment equipment suppliers must provide a broad range of customized treatment technologies to appeal to various industrial end-users."
