Scottish Water begins operations on Aviemore water project

Water utility Scottish Water has commenced operations on its £24m water treatment project to serve the customers in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.

The water treatment works at Kinakyle, south of Aviemore, will provide drinking water for 10,000 people.

Aviemore project supplies homes and businesses from Newtonmore in the south, through Kingussie and Aviemore to Grantown and Cromdale in the north.

Scottish Water operations manager Simon Harrison said the company’s customers will benefit in many ways from the new Aviemore water treatment works.

"By using boreholes rather than a remote mountain loch as our source we can access and maintain the supply more easily, increase the capacity available to support economic growth and protect the sensitive Cairngorms environment," Harrison said.

Building work at Kinakyle began in March 2010, and the project is a joint collaboration between Scottish Water Solutions and the engineering, consulting and construction firm Black and Veatch.

As part of the project, the utility created a storage tank to hold up to a day’s worth of treated drinking water.

Scottish Water Communities manager for the area Joanna Peebles said as the major construction project for the Aviemore area, the water treatment works enhance the local economy.

"I’d like to thank the community of Aviemore for their understanding while the new works and associated pipelines were constructed," Peebles said.

"The new supply will serve them and the surrounding communities well for many years to come."

The project also includes filters, which remove impurities down to microscopic level, to treat the new borehole supply.
