Servizi Ambientali upgrades wastewater plant in Italy

Servizi Ambientali has expanded its existing water plant in the town of Borghetto Santo Spirito, in Italy, using General Electric’s (GE’s) membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology.

The existing plant was constructed three years ago with a capacity of 7 million litres per day, and has now been expanded to a maximum capacity of 35 million litres per day.

The expansion was carried out using GE’s ZeeWeed technology to increase water flow and to cater to the needs of 140,000 residents in the towns of Borghetto S Spirito, Loano, Toirano, Boissano, Balestrino and Ceriale.

Servizi Ambientali chief executive officer Giovanni Paganelli said that the expansion has taken the wastewater plant from a simple primary treatment to one with advanced biological processes and membranes that provides high-level effluent quality.

"Our newly upgraded plant now results in the best effluent water quality ever achieved, enabling us to serve a larger population and at the same time, diverting the cleaned wastewater for non-potable reuse," added Paganelli.

GE supplied MBR technology and equipment featuring ZeeWeed 500D reinforced, hollow-fibre membranes for the expansion and upgrade of the wastewater plant.

The ZeeWeed 500 technology separates particles, bacteria and viruses from water or wastewater to produce drinking water and to meet wastewater treatment and water reuse standards.
