Shaftex preferred bidder to construct new water supply system in Zambia

Zambia-based Shaftex has been selected by Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company (CHWSC) as the preferred bidder for a K31bn ($6.2bn) contract to build a new water supply system in the district of Nakonde located in the country’s Northern Province.

The new water supply system is expected to provide fresh drinking water to the natives of the region.

Under the contract, Shaftex will build a new water treatment plant, improve storage facilities, construct four staff houses and lay a new water supply network in the district.

CHWSC public relations officer Mutale Mwamba was quoted by Zambia Daily Mail as saying that the tender process was managed by the provincial administration in Northern Province.

"We wish to inform the public that a contractor for the water supply improvement project in Nakonde has been picked," Mwamba said.

"Shaftex Limited is the preferred contactor and we are confident that it will deliver a formidable product like it has done in the past."

The company announced that the project would create local jobs during the development of the project.

Shaftex consultant Mangani Zulu said the company will deliver the project as per the expectations of CHWSC.

"Our pledge is to construct a very solid water supply system that will last long after people start using it," Zulu added.

"Let me also assure the residents of Nakonde that we will not be importing manpower on this project, these jobs are meant for them."

The project is estimated to take about a year to complete.

Shaftex is a wholly-owned Zambian company that takes up work funded by the government. CHWSC is a provider of water and sewerage services to 12 districts in Northern Province, Zambia.
