Texan city assigns Siemens to improve water and energy savings

Siemens’ building technologies division has secured a $9.3m energy savings performance contract from Bay City in Texas, US, to help the city reduce its water consumption by more than 70% and electricity consumption by 30%.

The improvements include the city’s wastewater and potable water supply systems, water meters, and municipal lighting.

Under the 15-year contract, Siemens will replace blower motors and aeration equipment at the city’s aging wastewater treatment plant and upgrade the infrastructure at 26 facilities to reduce energy usage.

A new supervisory control and data acquisition system will allow workers to monitor and control the city’s lift station pumps.

With the installation of a non-potable water source that will reuse water from the wastewater treatment plant, Bay City can expect to save more than 16 million gallons of drinking water annually.

Siemens will also install new water meters, which allow wireless transmission of consumption data besides better leak detection. More than 8,100 of these new meters are expected to replace existing ones.

Other water saving measures include replacing domestic water and plumbing fixtures throughout city facilities. Once completed, the combined measures are expected to yield $700,000 savings for the city every year.
