Tanzania, Geita Gold Mines sign MOU to implement water supply project

The Tanzanian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Geita Gold Mines (GGM) to implement a TZS15.4bn ($9.6m) water project in the town of Geita.

Geita Gold Mines managing director Gary Davies was quoted by Daily News as saying, "The project involves extending mining site water supply for Geita town using the existing infrastructure, including the GGM pipeline from Nungwe Bay in Lake Victoria and the mine storage reservoir in Nyankanga Dam currently being used for storage and supply of mine processing water."

GGM and the government are aiming to carry out the project to provide reliable water supply services in the town.

Of the total cost, the government will provide TZS9.4bn ($5.8m), while GGM will invest TZS6bn ($3.7m).

The water project work involves setting up an intake at the Nyankanga dam, building an untreated water storage tank near the treatment tank and developing a multi-stage filtration and disinfection treatment plant.

The scope of the work also includes construction of a clean water storage plant, installation of transfer pumps and installation of 5.9km and 350mm diameter pipeline from the dam to a water storage tank, situated at Katoma hill-Kasco area.

In addition, setting up of a 1,200m³ storage tank at Kasco area will also be undertaken.

The MOU was signed by GGM and Tanzania Water Ministry permanent secretary Christopher Sayi on behalf of the government, in the presence of Geita Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority and Geita Town Council officials.
