VA Tech Wabag JV wins contract for sewage treatment facility in Bahrain

India-based water treatment firm VA Tech Wabag has won a contract for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Bahrain, along with its joint venture partner Belhasa Projects.

The contract, with worth Rs5.8bn ($91.4m), is the first EPC order for Wabag in Bahrain.

The facility will be built in Al Madina Al Shamaliya (AMAS), which is a new town being developed in the Asian country.

Funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Economic Development (ADFD), the project is being developed for the Ministry of Housing in Bahrain.

The STP is expected to have a treatment capacity for 40 million litres per day (MLD).

Wabag Middle East and Africa managing director Erik Gothlin said: "Securing this high value order gives me immense pleasure since the JV has won this order competing against some of the renowned international players in the water space.

"This also reiterates WABAG’s technical proficiency which is well accepted in the Middle East market."

AMAS is being developed on reclaimed land area in Bahrain away from its north coast. The town will be spread over 13 islands and cover land area of around 750ha in total.

The new town will feature housing, recreational, and facilities for business activities having around 15,000 dwelling units.

The sewage treatment facility will feature technology for tertiary filtration and sludge treatment including aerobic digestion and thermal drying. Once commissioned, the plant is expected to supply water for irrigation in all 13 islands of AMAS.
