VA Tech Wabag wins contract to operate and maintain wastewater system in Istanbul, Turkey

Water treatment firm VA Tech Wabag has won a two-year contract for operating and maintaining the wastewater system in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Indian company will work for the city’s utility Istanbul Water and Sewage Administration through its local subsidiary.

With a population count of over 16 million, Istanbul generates more than five million m³ of domestic and industrial effluents daily, which will need to be processed and disposed under the project.

Wabag will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the city’s wastewater infrastructure which includes three central treatment plants, 50 supplementary treatment plants and nine pre-treatment plants along with a 23MW biogas power plant.

The wastewater treatment facilities have a combined capacity for 850,000m³ daily.

Under the terms of the contract, Wabag will receive more than $50m per year for its services, with the payments to be paid every month.

VA Tech Wabag managing director and group CEO Rajiv Mittal was cited by The Hindu BusinessLine as saying that the project has been won through an international tender.

Turkish subsidiary of Wabag has been serving the city’s wastewater infrastructure for over six months as part of the contract, which has a provision for extension after the initial two years.
