Veolia Water launches new wastewater treatment plant in Warsaw, Poland

France-based Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has inaugurated the newly constructed, expanded and upgraded Czajka wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the city of Warsaw, Poland.

The project is now complete after four years of construction, upgrade, and extension work carried out by Veolia.

Czajka WWTP has a capacity to treat 435,000m³ per day of wastewater, exceeding the old plant’s capacity of around 200,000m³ per day.

The plant, which is operating in line with the European standards, has been designed to manage up to 515,000m³ per day.

Czajka wastewater plant works on the active sludge principle where the wastewater is settled and treated biologically to remove carbon, phosphate and nitrogen.

Veolia’s Bio-denitro process is used to remove nitrogen, while odours are treated by using its air treatment process, Aquilair.

Under the upgrade work, the company installed a 30km of wastewater collection system, built a tunnel and a siphon under the Vistula to transport the left bank effluent, rebuilt, modernised and extended the existing treatment plant, and built a sludge incineration plant.

Veolia Water chief operating officer Jean de Vauxclairs said the company executed the WWTP work at a cost of €462m ($593.3m) through its Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies three subsidiaries, along with Warbud, a subsidiary of Vinci Construction, and German company WTE.

"For the sludge incineration plant (€103 million), the consortium was led by Veolia Water and included three Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies subsidiaries and Warbud," Vauxclairs added.

"At the end of the treatment process, 90% of the infeed sludge has disappeared and theremaining 10% is recovered. The plant treats 600t ofsludge a day."

The European Cohesion Fund provided 40% that was nearly €565m ($725.5m), while almost 60% was provided by the Municipality of Warsaw for the total investment, which was more than €769m ($987.5m).
