Water Breeze launches solar-powered technology to drill water in Rwanda

Cyprus-based firm Water Breeze will use its new solar-powered drilling technology to access groundwater in Rwanda.

The new technology is expected to address the problem of limited access to clean, drinkable water in the country, particularly in rural areas.

Water-pumping facilities are powered by solar energy and are priced at RWF32m ($50,000). They can pump around 8,000l an hour from approximately 250ft below the surface.

Water Breeze Africa regional director Oleg Moiseev said that many people contract water-borne diseases due to limited access to safe and clean water.

"With this technology, we will ensure that all Rwandans, especially those in the rural areas that are not connected to electricity, have access to clean water," he said.

The company launched the technology in Rilima in Bugesera district, where it donated and installed a new water pump at a local school.

Bugesera district Mayor Louis Rwagaju said that the technology could be a sustainable solution in places with no access to drinkable water.

"We wish more donors and other stakeholders join the government and support the project," he said. "Remember, lack of clean water is more expensive than the $50,000 that is needed to install the system."

Water Breeze and the Rwandan Government are currently discussing plans to improve accessibility to clean water throughout the country.

According to a recent report by UNICEF, almost 25% of Rwanda’s population has no access to safe drinking water, while another 35% rely on unsafe sources or travel long distances for clean water.
