West Basin renews water recycling plant agreement with United Water

The US West Basin Municipal Water District has renewed a $50m five-year professional services agreement with United Water to operate and maintain the Edward C Little Water Recycling Plant and four satellite plants.

The facility is capable of producing over 40 million gallons of water a day for industrial and other uses.

Around 12 million gallons of the water is used in a seawater intrusion barrier where it protects local groundwater from seawater intrusion and also augments local groundwater supplies.

United Water CEO Bertrand Camus said that renewal of the contract shows the good working relationship between United Water and West Basin and a high level of trust that both the companies accord each other.

"We have been partners for two decades, working together to conserve and preserve potable water supplies in southern California," Camus added.

West Basin Municipal Water District president Carol Kwan said that recycling is a key part of its Water Reliability 2020 programme, which will provide the district with more locally controlled, sustainable and reliable supplies of water in the future.

"Our water supply is our most precious resource, and the partnership with United Water has allowed us to continue to expand our water recycling programme and provide more quality recycled water to our communities," Kwan added.

United Water environmental services president Nadine Leslie said: "We are excited about continuing our role in supporting the innovative work being done by the West Basin Municipal Water District.
