Xylem to provide wastewater treatment technology for Brazilian sewage plant

Brazil-based Aguas Guariroba, a provider of wastewater collection and treatment services, has selected Xylem to supply its wastewater treatment system and technology for the still-under-construction Imbirussu plant in Brazil.

The Imbirussu wastewater treatment plant is being constructed in Campo Grande, a Brazilian city in the state of Mato Grosso, to improve the wastewater quality in 33 districts of the city and serve up to 60,000 people.

Under the contract, Xylem will provide its Sanitaire brand intermittent cycle extended aeration system (ICEAS) biological technology to treat the wastewater.

Xylem Latin America managing director Richard Dixon said the Sanitaire ICEAS system is energy-efficient and has a compact outline to use.

"As urban populations expand across Latin America, wastewater treatment is becoming an increasingly important issue for public health and safety," Dixon added.

"Xylem is helping to address these and other water issues, providing technical expertise along with market-leading solutions."

So far, Aguas Guariroba has spent $7m on the Imbirussu project as part of the its $28m investment plan to install 139km of new sewerage networks in the city and serve 70% of the households by mid-2013.

Xylem has already installed over 90,000 Sanitaire diffusers in the country and is helping upgrade the existing wastewater treatment systems, as well as developing new systems.

US-based Xylem is a water technology provider and helps transport, treat, test, and efficiently use water in public utilities, residential and commercial building services, and industrial and agricultural areas.
