NCC to remodel and extend Swedish municipality wastewater treatment plant

Construction firm NCC will carry out remodelling and extension works of  central wastewater treatment plant of Kristianstad Municipality in Sweden.

At the project site, groundwork began in spring 2020.

For the largest part of the project, which involves the development of the actual treatment facility, a suborder has now been placed. This order features a value of around $43m (SEK360m).

To meet the increasing requirements of the municipality, the city’s wastewater management system had to be expanded.

In 2017, NCC and Kristianstad Municipality signed an agreement for the extension project.

Since then, the two entities have been working together on aspect of planning, budgeting and designing for the remodelling project.

In May 2020, NCC commenced preparing the ground for the construction phase of the project.

After extensive piling work and in structural engineering,  construction of the wastewater treatment building can now begin.

NCC Infrastructure business area president Kenneth Nilsson said: “The project is being carried out in partnering form with Kristianstad Municipality and we have now reached an agreement on the scope of the next stage of the work and have signed a construction contract. Together we will build a cost-effective facility and we look forward to our continued collaboration.”

After completion of the work, the new facility will be equipped with the latest technology, including a membrane bioreactor (MBR).

Kenneth further added: “Kristianstad’s new central treatment plant will be built next to the old one, which is a major advantage in engineering terms. When the plant is commissioned in 2024, it will be a state-of-the-art treatment plant, built to serve for many years ahead.”
