Envirogen Begins Construction of Drinking Water Treatment Plant

Envirogen Technologies has started building the first biological drinking water treatment plant for perchlorate removal in collaboration with West Valley Water District and the city of Rialto, California, US.

The new plant will treat perchlorate and nitrate from groundwater at District Well No 11 and Rialto Well No 6 to produce three million gallons per day of drinking water.

The new plant will consist of a fluidised bed bioreactor and a traditional surface water treatment plant to bring the effluent to potable water standards.

The plant will use naturally occurring microorganisms on a fluidised media bed to reduce influent perchlorate concentrations as high as 300ppb and nitrate concentrations of 20ppm to non-detectable levels.

The plant was set up following more than ten years of development by Envirogen to address a major perchlorate plume, which has threatened the Rialto-Colton Basin’s water supply since its detection in 1997.
