Iraq Opens $130m Sewage Treatment Plant

Iraq has inaugurated a new sewage treatment plant in the province of al-Muthanna.

The plant and another water desalination project were carried out at a cost of NID160bn ($130m).

The sewage treatment plant will filter sanitary sewage water from the al-Samawa network after the completion of a project to expand the city’s network, which is expected to be finalised within the next few months.

The Greater Samawa water project will be implemented at a cost of NID129.5bn ($109.8m) and will supply 10,000 cubic metres of drinking water per hour.

The plant will have eight operational facilities to filter and recycle sewage water, three pumping stations, five service buildings and three lodges to house engineers working on the project.

The total cost of the project is NID31.4bn ($20m) and the plant will have a capacity of 32,000 cubic metres per day.

The recycled sewage water will be used in agriculture and to produce organic fertilisers.
