European Investment Bank Funds Israeli Desalination Plant

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved €142m ($200m) to Sorek Desalination for the design and construction of a seawater desalination plant using reverse osmosis technology in Sorek, Israel.

The desalination plant will have a production capacity of 150 million cubic metres per year and will enhance the sustainability of Israel’s water sector.

The plant will blend desalinated water with fresh potable water from the national water carrier system, improving the quality of water while reducing hardness and concentrations of salts, nitrates and boron.

The project’s financing is part of the EIB’s support programme to improve Israel’s wastewater treatment and drinking water supplies.
