Petrom, a member of OMV Group since 2004, has awarded WABAG an order for the modernisation and operational management of the wastewater treatment plant at its Petrobrazi refinery for the coming three years. The signing of the contract, which also represented the start signal for the work, took place in March 2008.
Petrobrazi refinery, owned by Petrom, is located near Ploiesti city in the heart of one of the most important industrial areas in Romania, about 60km north of the capital Bucharest. Petrom has drawn up an ambitious investment programme which will turn Petrobrazi into the most modern refinery in Romania and enable it to fulfil both European and OMV environmental, health and safety standards, following comprehensive modernisation and expansion measures. Petrom has secured the know-how and experience of WABAG Vienna for the related upgrading of the wastewater treatment plant.
One-stop shop modernisation and operation
WABAG, the international specialist for the construction and operation of water treatment plants, has undertaken the modernisation of Petrobrazi wastewater treatment facility which processes 36,000m³ of wastewater in an environmentally friendly manner. The main elements in the contract consist of refurbishing the mechanical pre-cleaning, chemical dosing and neutralisation, as well as upgrading the biological cleaning stage for nitrogen removal.
At the same time, WABAG ensured the operational management of the plant and initiated measures for an improvement in safety and health standards. The newly founded WABAG subsidiary in Ploiesti has taken over approximately 100 Petrom employees, ensuring continuous plant operation even during the conversion work.
WABAG – water technology expertise for the petrochemical sector
In WABAG Petrom has found an experienced and reliable partner for the complete support of its wastewater treatment plant. The company has already completed numerous installations for petrochemical plants, industrial wastewater treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants and wastewater recycling systems.
For WABAG, the contract is of major significance for several reasons. Following a series of municipal plants in Romania, Petrobrazi facility represents for WABAG an important order in the industrial sector of a core market and can thus further consolidate its position as a DBO (design build operate) specialist. Confidentiality was agreed with regard to the contractual value.
