Xylem wins contract for Tai Po Water Treatment project in Hong Kong, China

Global water technology provider Xylem has received a contract to provide its Leopold technology for the expansion of Tai Po Water Treatment Works in Hong Kong, China.

Clarification and filtration systems, to be provided by Xylem, are expected to double the daily water treatment capacity of the facility from 400 million litres to 800 million litres.

The project intends to increase the overall resilience, flexibility and reliability of water supply in the city.

It will also help in sharing water treatment loads of other facilities by supplying potable water to Kowloon West and the Central and Western districts of Hong Kong Island.

Local company ATAL Engineering will co-ordinate with Xylem for the project expansion works.

ATAL Engineering associate director Barry Lee said: "Xylem’s Leopold systems were chosen because of their proven efficiency, reliability and reduced life cycle costs, as well as Xylem’s local presence and commitment to delivering tailored aftermarket service for customers."

The facility will be equipped with Leopold Clari-DAF dissolved air flotation system and Leopold Type S underdrain solutions under the expansion initiative.

Leopold Clari-DAF systems enable creation of millions of microbubbles to float solid particles on the water surface, which is then removed by mechanical skimming or hydraulic de-sludging.

Leopold Type S underdrain features closely spaced, non-clogging orifices which enable uniform distribution of wash water and air. The underdrains facilitate trouble free operation and thorough cleaning of the filters at reduced maintenance costs and less time.

The firm has installed nearly 8,000 Leopold underdrains worldwide till date.
