Biwater to construct water supply infrastructure in Ghana

Biwater has secured a contract worth $272m from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for the construction and expansion of water supply infrastructure in Tamale.

Upon completion, the project will benefit 800,000 people living in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Biwater regional director for Africa Giles Jackson said: “We are delighted to have been entrusted to construct these important works. This project will see the population of Tamale benefit from the construction of a new strategic water supply infrastructure together with network enhancements.”

The scope of the contract covers design, construction and commissioning of a new water treatment plant at Yapei.

The company will also be responsible for installation of pumps, transmission pipelines, pumping stations, new district offices and power lines.

The plant will provide 135,000 m³ of drinking water daily to Tamale and the surrounding areas.

Ghana Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said: “This new project is aimed at addressing the supply constraints for Tamale and its surrounding communities as well as achieving the Government of Ghana’s target of water for all by 2030.

“Water asset management would be improved through the provision and laying of primary distribution network, service connection materials and training of staff.”

Biwater will also have the responsibility of  delivering water asset management programme that will expand the distribution network, thereby enabling GWCL to connect to new consumers in Tamale.

Tamale, which is the capital of the Northern Region of Ghana, is one of the fastest growing cities in the African continent.
