US EPA to install new treatment system at New York wastewater facility

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will install an additional treatment technology at an existing wastewater treatment plant at the Dewey Loeffel Landfill Superfund site in Nassau, Rensselaer County, New York.

The treatment plant was built under a 2012 agreement with the EPA. It is operated by GE and the SI group.

The facility treats landfill leachate and contaminated groundwater. It started operations in January.

The added treatment is being installed because the EPA and the companies have agreed that adding the specialised treatment is the best long-term treatment option for 1,4-dioxane.

The new treatment system will be used to further treat chemical 1,4-dioxane, a stabiliser and solvent that is a component of some cosmetics, detergents and shampoos. It is expected to be operational in November.
