Costa Rica Plans Sewage Plant

Costa Rica is to build a sewage treatment plant in La Carpio, a neighbourhood of capital city San Jose, to treat sewage in the Central Valley region.

The plant will treat sewage produced by more than one million people in the Central Valley and prevent the dumping of raw sewage into the Virilla and Tarcoles rivers.

The plant will treat 2.81 of sewage per second, ensuring treated sewage is released into the Virilla River, which feeds the Tarcoles River that runs into the Pacific Ocean.

The water treatment plant is part of the San Jose Sewage Project, which includes interconnecting the sewer systems of 11 administrative divisions and installing 400km of additional tubing.

The cost of the project is $270m, of which $150m will be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The remaining $120m will come from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), including $46m for the treatment plant.

The project will benefit Montes de Oca (San Pedro), Curridabat, Coronado, Tibas and Moravia, Escazu, Alajuelita, San Jose and Cartago, according to insideconstarica.com.
