Japan Funds Indian River Clean-Up Project

Japan is to provide a Rs25bn ($563m) loan to India to carry out three projects covering improvements to agriculture, biodiversity and the environment, including the Yamuna River clean-up project.

The majority of the loan will be used for cleaning up the River Yamuna under the Yamuna Action Plan Project, which is being carried out jointly by India and Japan.

The project will improve the water quality of the Yamuna River by augmenting sewage treatment capacity through the renovation of the sewerage system in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The total cost of the Yamuna Action Plan is estimated at Rs22bn ($493.6m), out of which Japan will provide Rs17bn ($395m).

The loan is part of the 2010 Japan International Cooperation Agency’s Overseas Development Assistance to India, according to thehindu.com.
