IDB approves loan for Venezuelan water and sanitation improvements

The Inter-American Development Bank has approved a loan of $100m for Venezuela to improve access to water and sanitation services for 11,000 households in 68 rural communities and towns.

Under the first component of the programme, measures will be taken to strengthen the capacity of local water and sanitation organisations and service providers to effectively contract and supervise infrastructure works and manage the services sustainably.

The component will also include education activities in beneficiary communities to ensure that stakeholders understand the public health and environmental benefits of water and sanitation services.

The second component will include financing technical studies, project design, construction, expansion and rehabilitation of water and sanitation infrastructure in 68 communities.

The work includes wells, water treatment systems, distribution pipelines, storage tanks, in-home connections and septic tanks.
