New Technology to Prevent Storm Water Pollution

Scientists from the Agricultural Research Service in the US have developed a new super sock technology, which can prevent water pollution in storm water.

The socks wrap around storm drains and trap pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals and petroleum products, preventing their intrusion into water supplies and water sources.

The compost-filled mesh tubes remove most of the clay, silt and other particles that are present in surface waters.

During tests, the socks captured 17% ammonium nitrogen, 75% of E. coli bacteria and up to 72% of heavy metals.

The socks also reduce gasoline runoff by 43%, motor oil runoff by 84% and diesel fuel runoff by 99%, according to naturalnews.com.
