Lebanon Plans Water Project

Lebanon plans to construct a water transfer project to supply water from Awali River in South Lebanon to Beirut.

US-based wet infrastructure company MWH was selected to conduct a feasibility study for the $350m first phase of the Awali-Beirut water supply project, which involves laying a 35km gravity tunnel or gravity pipeline to supply water.

The three-phase project involves taking water from an existing tunnel south of Beirut, delivering it to a treatment plant, supplying the treated water via a 24km tunnel and then to new reservoirs in South Beirut.

The first phase of the project is expected to treat and supply 260 million litres per day of water, according to utilities-me.com.
