Desalitech secures funding from Liberation Capital for high-efficiency water treatment solutions

US-based water treatment solutions provider Desalitech has secured $5m in equity funding from Liberation Capital and its institutional investors to support its development of high-efficiency industrial water and effluent treatment solutions.

With the latest funding, Liberation Capital’s total investment has increased to $9.5m, while the total amount raised by Desalitech has jumped over $13m.

Desalitech’s Closed Circuit Desalination (CCD) solutions are the first major improvement in reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment that has reduced the costs by 20% to 60%.

The solution has increased water-use efficiency, reduced energy consumption, increased flexibility and reliability, and decreased the emission of brine waste.

CCD products can extract purified water from challenging sources and are well suited for industrial water and effluent treatment, agricultural water supply and inland brackish desalination.

Desalitech said that the CCD systems can desalinate seawater with 1.5 kWh/m3 energy, against 2kWh/m3 to 3kWh/m3 with advanced conventional RO.

The company’s CCD products can recycle concentrate until a desired recovery level is achieved and brine is replaced with feed without disrupting the production of treated water.

According to UNESCO, around 60% of fresh water is wasted by industries, adding pressure for more water resources and the need for efficient and cost-effective water supply and wastewater treatment solutions.

Desalitech executive vice president Richard Stover said that industries cannot waste water or money by using the obsolete treatment approaches.

"The status quo of 25% waste or more is simply no longer acceptable. Desalitech is setting a new standard by reducing waste by up to 70% and energy consumption by upwards of 30%," Stover added.

Liberation Capital managing director Jeff Garwood said that the firm has developed a superior and differentiated technology to meet the growing and irreversible market demand for high efficiency and high recovery.

"Their solutions are ideal for industrial and agricultural water treatment, where fresh water supply and effluent disposal costs have become a burden, or even a limiting factor in many cases," Garwood added.
