World Bank allocates financing for Ghana water project

The World Bank (WB) has allocated an additional $50m to the Government of Ghana to support the ongoing Urban Water Project in the country.

The additional funding is a supplement $103m grant the Bank has assigned to the project and will enable improved water supply in selected urban areas across the country.

Ghana Urban Water Project task team leader Ventura Bengoechea said, "The additional financing approved by the Board of the World Bank today will allow the project to fully achieve and even exceed the targets that were originally contemplated with regard to people gaining access to water in selected urban areas throughout the country."

The proceeds will be used to supply boreholes, a potable water plant to remove iron and disinfect water, two elevated storage tanks and water distribution pipes in the Berekum District, Brong Ahafo.

Upper East regions, Bawku and Navrongo, will also receive the Bank’s funding to install new water facilities.

WB will allocate additional funds for the expansion and improvement to the Winneba water distribution network in the Central Region, which serves its surrounding communities including Apam, Ankamu, Mprumem, Mankoadze, Ankaful, Pomadze and Okyereko.
