Ghana inaugurates water supply rehabilitation and expansion project

Ghana President John Dramani Mahama has opened the $21.6m Mampong Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion Project in the Ashanti Region of the country.

The project is aimed at increasing water supply to 10.5 million gallons a day from 2.5 million gallons a day for communities in the region. It is funded by a concessionary loan between the Government of Ghana and the US EXIM Bank with a grant element of 35%.

The project is expected to serve around 58,000 people in Mampong Municipality as well as surrounding communities in the Sekyere areas of the region. It has the capacity to meet water demands in the region for a projected population of around 90,000 until 2020.

Communities including Damang, Daano, Bosofour, Besease, Kyeremfaso and Krobo, Mpenya, Dadease, Bonkrom, Nsuta and Beposo will be benefited by the project.

As part of the expansion, design and engineering work, dredging works will take place in order to increase storage capacity, rehabilitation of the existing water treatment plant and construction of new transmission pipelines.

Originally established in 1961, the project was expected to serve around 20,000 people. As the area has grown in population, its capacity has been unable to meet demands.
