Australian State to Upgrade Water Treatment Plant

The state of Western Australia is to invest $23m to upgrade its water treatment plant in Busselton.

Work includes the deployment of new ‘oxidation ditch’ technology to reduce the nutrient concentration of treated wastewater by 50% compared with the current facility.

The project also includes improvements to the plant’s inlet works to help with odour management.

The plant’s capacity will be increased to 6.75 million litres per day and additional flows will be installed if required.

Busselton officials say the upgrade will reduce the amount of nutrients entering Geographe Bay.

Construction contracts for the upgrade will be awarded in the final quarter of 2010.
