World Bank to Fund Uzbekistan Water Supply Project

The World Bank is to provide $88m in credit to Uzbekistan to improve the water supply network in the Syrdarya region of the country.

The credit facility will finance the Syrdarya Water Supply Project, which aims to improve the availability, quality and sustainability of public water supply services of six districts in the region.

The project will rehabilitate the existing infrastructure and replace obsolete systems that are beyond rehabilitation.

The project will benefit nearly half of Syrdarya’s total population of 700,000 people.

The towns are currently supplied with treated water through regional transmission schemes or from 250 individual wells, which are in such a state of disrepair that the water supplies of many towns have broken down.
