EPA to Clean Groundwater at NL Industries Site

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a plan to clean up groundwater at the NL Industries site in New Jersey, which is contaminated with heavy metals such as lead and cadmium.

EPA proposed an innovative approach that will include injecting a non-hazardous additive into the groundwater to absorb the metals instead of using the more traditional method of pumping the groundwater to the surface and treating it to remove contaminants.

EPA regional administrator Judith Enck said the treatment of contaminated groundwater at the NL Industries site will keep the contamination from polluting drinking water supplies.

The company will also conduct a study to determine the type and quantity of the additive to be used.
