Researchers Develop System to Extract Drinking Water from Air

Fourteen Fraunhofer institutes have joined forces with the Fraunhofer Alliance SysWasser to develop a system to tap drinking water from air.

The researchers claim that drinking water can be extracted from the humidity in air – even in a desert – by technology developed by the Fraunhofer research institute.

The system uses a salt solution, which runs down a tower-shaped system and absorbs water from air.

This hygroscopic brine is then pumped into a tank, where solar energy is used to heat the brine. Evaporated salt-free water is then condensed and collected.
