Molycorp selects Univar to distribute water treatment technology in North America

US-based Molycorp Advanced Water Technologies has signed a five-year agreement with Univar, a chemical and related products distributor, to distribute its water treatment product, SorbX-100TM, to municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities in North America.

The value of the distribution agreement was not disclosed by either company.

Molycorp’s SorbX-100TM earlier known as XSORBXTM, is a cerium-based product that removes phosphorus, heavy metals and other pollutants from industrial and municipal wastewater streams.

The technology offers a cost-effective alternative to reduce phosphorus discharge, chemical usage, and sludge volumes and improve environmental compliance of wastewater treatment facilities.

As part of the deal, Univar, with its extensive North American network, will create opportunities for US and Canadian municipalities to benefit from the SorbX-100TM wastewater treatment solution.

Univar president and chief executive officer Erik Fyrwald said that the company through its network will distribute Molycorp’s innovate solution to North America’s wastewater treatment facilities and help them to achieve better operational efficiency.

"Effective wastewater treatment is critical to ensuring a safe and positive impact on our environment and the quality of life to people everywhere, every day," Fyrwald added.

Molycorp president and chief executive officer Constantine Karayannopoulos said, "Univar’s dedicated team of professionals understands the needs of the operators in this industry, and I’m confident they will help our customers reach their phosphorus removal targets in a more cost effective manner while producing less waste."

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s facility discharge compliance data of 2011, 397 facilities of the 3,058 wastewater treatment facilities that have phosphorous discharge permits, do not comply with the set standards.
