NYC Starts Work on $404m Brooklyn Sewer Facility

New York City Department of Environmental Protection has started work on the new Paerdegat Basin Combined Sewer Overflow Facility in Brooklyn, New York, US.

During heavy rain the $404m facility will prevent up to 50 million gallons of combined sewer overflows from being discharged into Paerdegat Basin, a 1.25 mile channel connected to Jamaica Bay.

Each year the facility will also prevent 1.2 billion gallons of untreated wastewater from flowing into Jamaica Bay during storms.

The facility will improve water quality in Paerdegat Basin and Jamaica Bay by increasing dissolved oxygen concentrations, lowering coliform levels, removing nearly all floatables, and capturing up to 80% of settleable solids, which can create sediment mounds and cause unpleasant odours in the basin and the bay.

The facility will reduce the overall combined overflow discharges into the basin by approximately 70% to 555 million gallons per year.
