Scottish Water to improve water infrastructure on Mull Island, Scotland

Water and sewerage services provider Scottish Water has announced it will undertake a water infrastructure improvement programme on the Mull Island, in the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland.

Under the £5.7m ($6.6m) investment, Scottish Water will perform major improvements to the water infrastructure on the island to provide clear and fresh drinking water in the Craignure area to meet peak summer demand in the Tobermory area.

As part of the improvement programme, the utility will upgrade the infrastructure of Tobermory Water Treatment Works (WTW) and make it the primary source of water supply instead of Craignure WTW.

The water plant upgrade work will involve improvements to the existing treatment process to increase its treatment capacity and improve reliability of water supply.

Scottish Water will supply fresh water through more than 11 miles of new water mains that will be installed between Salen and Craignure during the project.

The extended water mains will also reach a new Craignure service reservoir that will be built near the existing WTW above the village.

Scottish Water water operations team manager Paul Morley said the project was one of the important projects the company has undertaken to benefit its customers in Mull.

"The project follows a strategic review by Scottish Water of options to tackle water supply and growth issues on the island and we are delighted to be starting our work later this summer," Morley said.

The project is expected to start at the end of September or by early October and will be carried out by contractor Expanded, which is a part of Laing O’Rourke.

Scottish Water said the upgrade work is expected to take around 18 months to complete.
