US city approves wastewater plant expansion

The city of Prescott in Arizona, US has approved a $35.3m expansion and redevelopment of the wastewater treatment plant near Prescott Airport.

The expansion will increase the plant’s treatment capacity from 1.2 million gallons a day to 3.75 million gallons a day, according to the Prescott Daily Courier.

The plant was originally designed to process 2.2 million gallons a day, but the increasing concentration of incoming sewage has reduced the plant’s capacity.

City Manager Craig McConnell said that around 60% of the project’s cost will be spent on restoring the plant to full working order, while the rest will be spent on increasing capacity.

The expansion, which is due to be completed in autumn 2014, is reportedly the largest public civil works project the city has carried out in 20 years.
